3 Things Every Addict In Recovery Needs To Hear

by Timmothy Miles

Nobody chooses to be an addict. In the face of the pain that an addiction brings, they may make some bad choices along the way, but nobody ever wants to become an addict. When one is taking the necessary actions to make a full recovery, you should offer your support and encouragement in any way that you can. One way to help a recovering addict is to provide positive reinforcement. When writing a card or visiting an addict in recovery, try saying any of the following that accurately express how you feel. It can mean the world to the person and help them stay on the right path.

You Can Become Weller Than Well

This is a hopeful phrase that lets a recovering addict know that the best is yet to come. The concept of being "weller than well" refers to anyone who has put a lot of time and effort into working on themselves. The insights gained can help them become aware of their behaviors and how they treat others to the point that they may even become more well than the average person. After all, most people aren't as thoughtful about such things. The phrase "weller than well" was coined by psychiatrist Karl Menninger in his 1963 book "The Vital Balance". In this book, he stated that transcendence does occur, and it's good to expect it.

You Are More Than Your Problems

So many people see the addiction as such a strong force in their life, and it has a hold on them. That's why the first step in a 12-step program is to admit that one is powerless over the addiction. However, in the midst of an addiction and recovery, sometimes a person can lose sight of the fact that they are so much more than merely an addict. It doesn't define them as a person. By reminding them of this fact, you may help them feel more human and "normal" after all the lies an addiction has told them.

What Can Be Done to Make This Easier On You Just For Today?

You can't solve a recovering addict's biggest problems. No matter how much you love someone, you can't will them to get well. However, what you can do is offer to do small kindnesses to help them stay strong. By asking the simple question of what you can do this very day to relieve their burden a little, you are empowering them to receive help in a small amount that they may very much need. You may also suggest things that you'd like to do to help them or simply show up with a thoughtful gift.

Finally, keep in mind that it's important to reach out to someone you care about who is in recovery. They are sometimes abandoned by both family members and friends because of mistakes they made when in the grips of their addiction. By providing a source of support, you may help them refrain from a relapse and remain clean and sober.
